SOCCER IN ALBERTA

What a soccer weekend looks like in Alberta

The Alberta Soccer Association administers a season split sharply between a short outdoor summer and a long indoor winter played in domes and fieldhouses. Alberta organisers effectively run two different tournament seasons a year, and the indoor version compresses matches into shorter, faster blocks than the outdoor game.

Alberta's participation is concentrated in the Calgary and Edmonton metros, with Red Deer sitting almost exactly between them — which is why so many provincial events are hosted there rather than in either major city.

BUILT FOR SOCCER

Soccer, not generic sport

How the draw works

Soccer festivals and tournaments are the largest events in youth sport by team count — a single weekend can carry dozens of teams across a dozen age groups on six or eight fields at once. Draws are almost always group stage into a knockout, and matches frequently end level, so standings depend on a points system rather than a simple win-loss record.

Where TrakScore fits

TrakScore handles draws in the standings table and recalculates the group tables as results come in, so a coach on field six can see whether their group is decided without walking back to the tent.

Divisions

U9 through U18 in single-year age bands, tiered by division within each age group.

Season

An outdoor season from May through September and an indoor season from October through April, so tournaments run essentially year-round.

Vocabulary

Venues are fields, fixtures are matches, and standings track GF and GA.

FAQ

Soccer tournaments in Alberta

Can TrakScore run a soccer tournament in Alberta?

Yes. TrakScore is built for exactly this job: a director running a weekend soccer event with teams from across Alberta. You set the format, add your teams, generate the schedule and publish a public display board. Nothing about the platform is tied to a particular league or to the Alberta Soccer Association — you run your own event on your own terms.

Which soccer tournament formats are supported?

All five formats soccer organisers actually use: single elimination, double elimination, round robin, pool play feeding a playoff, and best-of series. Soccer events in Alberta most often use pool play into a playoff round, and TrakScore advances winners into the bracket automatically as each match goes final.

How do parents in Alberta follow the scores?

Every tournament gets a public display board at its own URL — no app, no account, no login. Put it on a screen on the sideline and share the same link with families. The Calgary–Edmonton corridor lets Alberta organisers run genuinely large draws without overnight travel for most entrants, so bracket sizes here skew bigger than in the Atlantic provinces.

Do my scorekeepers need accounts?

No. You can email a one-tap scoring link for any individual match, and the volunteer on the sideline opens it and enters the score — no download, no signup. That works on every plan including Free. Standing scorekeeper seats, for someone covering a whole weekend, come with Pro and above.

What does it cost to run a Alberta soccer tournament?

Free covers one tournament per season with up to 16 teams, which is enough for a small soccer draw. It is one tournament per organization, not per login. Beyond that an Event Pass is a one-time $79 for up to 32 teams, $149 up to 64 or $249 up to 128 — no subscription, and the event stays archived and publicly readable afterwards. If you run several soccer events a year — a division per weekend, say — the annual Season Pass works out cheaper.

Does TrakScore use the right terminology for soccer?

Yes — the product speaks soccer, not generic sport. Venues are labelled “Field”, fixtures are “Matchs”, and the standings table tracks GF and GA rather than a one-size-fits-all column. Age divisions in soccer run U9 through U18 in single-year age bands, tiered by division within each age group, and you can name yours whatever your event and the Alberta Soccer Association actually call them.
