How a round robin schedule works

In a round robin every team plays every other team once. With n teams that is n × (n − 1) ÷ 2 games — 28 for an eight-team field, 45 for ten. The games are dealt out in rounds, and in each round every team plays exactly once.

This generator uses the circle method: one team is held fixed and the rest rotate around it. That guarantees a valid schedule and keeps teams from playing back-to-back. When the team count is odd the rotation pads with a bye, so exactly one team sits out each round and every team sits out exactly once across the full rotation.

When to use pools instead

A full round robin gets expensive fast. Sixteen teams is 120 games — more than a weekend holds. Split the field into pools and each pool runs its own round robin, then the top finishers move into a playoff bracket. Four pools of four is 24 games instead of 120, and still gives every team three games.

Pools here are seeded snake-style: seeds 1, 2, 3, 4 go into pools A, B, C, D, then seeds 5, 6, 7, 8 come back D, C, B, A. That spreads the strong teams evenly instead of stacking one pool.
