BASKETBALL IN ONTARIO

What a basketball weekend looks like in Ontario

Ontario Basketball is the largest provincial basketball organisation in the country, administering a club system deep enough to tier most age groups several divisions down. Ontario tournaments run at a scale where score entry has to be distributed across court volunteers — no single director can keep up with the result volume alone.

Ontario is the largest youth-sport market in the country and the most organisationally fragmented: Southern, Eastern and Northwestern Ontario are administered separately in several sports, and Thunder Bay is closer to Winnipeg than to Toronto.

BUILT FOR BASKETBALL

Basketball, not generic sport

How the draw works

Basketball tournaments run fast and dense: games are short, courts turn over every hour or so, and a single gym can host four or five games in a morning. Points for and against decide most tiebreakers, and a director can be tracking twenty results before lunch on the Saturday.

Where TrakScore fits

The bottleneck is score entry, not bracket design. TrakScore lets a director hand a one-tap scoring link to a table volunteer on each court, so results reach the bracket as games finish rather than in a batch at the end of the day.

Divisions

U11 through U18 for both boys' and girls' streams, tiered Division 1 through 3 in most associations.

Season

A club and rep season running from autumn through spring, with the heaviest tournament traffic between January and April.

Vocabulary

Venues are courts, fixtures are games, and standings track PF and PA.

Round robin

Everyone plays everyone; the standings table decides it.

Pool play into playoffs

Groups on the Saturday, knockout on the Sunday.

Best-of series

BO3, BO5 or BO7, set independently per round, with automatic clinching.

FAQ

Basketball tournaments in Ontario

Can TrakScore run a basketball tournament in Ontario?

Yes. TrakScore is built for exactly this job: a director running a weekend basketball event with teams from across Ontario. You set the format, add your teams, generate the schedule and publish a public display board. Nothing about the platform is tied to a particular league or to Ontario Basketball — you run your own event on your own terms.

Which basketball tournament formats are supported?

All five formats basketball organisers actually use: single elimination, double elimination, round robin, pool play feeding a playoff, and best-of series. Basketball events in Ontario most often use pool play into a playoff round, and TrakScore advances winners into the bracket automatically as each game goes final.

How do parents in Ontario follow the scores?

Every tournament gets a public display board at its own URL — no app, no account, no login. Put it on a screen in the gym and share the same link with families. The practical consequence for an Ontario organiser is scale — draws of 24, 32 or more teams across several divisions are routine, and hand-maintained brackets stop being viable well before that point.

Do my scorekeepers need accounts?

No. You can email a one-tap scoring link for any individual game, and the volunteer in the gym opens it and enters the score — no download, no signup. That works on every plan including Free. Standing scorekeeper seats, for someone covering a whole weekend, come with Pro and above.

What does it cost to run a Ontario basketball tournament?

Free covers one tournament per season with up to 16 teams, which is enough for a small basketball draw. It is one tournament per organization, not per login. Beyond that an Event Pass is a one-time $79 for up to 32 teams, $149 up to 64 or $249 up to 128 — no subscription, and the event stays archived and publicly readable afterwards. If you run several basketball events a year — a division per weekend, say — the annual Season Pass works out cheaper.

Does TrakScore use the right terminology for basketball?

Yes — the product speaks basketball, not generic sport. Venues are labelled “Court”, fixtures are “Games”, and the standings table tracks PF and PA rather than a one-size-fits-all column. Age divisions in basketball run U11 through U18 for both boys' and girls' streams, tiered Division 1 through 3 in most associations, and you can name yours whatever your event and Ontario Basketball actually call them.
